Parents

Parent Support

Whilst we are fundamentally a children’s charity, we are able to offer counselling to parents as long as your child or young person is a client at CASY. Often parents need help with supporting their child and the affects of another’s emotional needs or a need to explore their own issues. If you would like to access counselling, please fill in the parental referral form. The initial contract would be for 9 weeks and the counselling would be individual, safe and confidential. Each session would cost up to £20.

The programme is for parents and looks at communication styles, increased parental presence and de-escalation techniques. The sessions are 1 hour long and are for 6-12 weeks. Individual Counselling for Children and Young People

Parenting is never easy. It can be difficult to know how to support your child when they are struggling with overwhelming thoughts and emotions. At CASY we offer a confidential, safe space where your child can explore their thoughts and feelings, increase resilience and develop strategies that they feel will help them manage their emotions.

Our counsellors work children and young people who are dealing with issues such as problems at school, relationships, anxiety, low self-esteem, self-harm, suicidal thoughts. No issue is too big or small. Each Counselling session will cost up to £20.

FAQ

What Happens in a Counselling Session?

The sessions are led by your child.

The counsellor is trained to reflect their thoughts and feelings and support them in making change.

For Primary school age children this may involve play therapy where children can work out their emotions through play as well as talking if the child engages this way. Sometimes older children and young people engage through play and art too.

How Long Does Counselling Last?

We will initially offer 9 sessions here in the Newark office but we are guided by the young person’s needs so it may be less or a few more.

Can I Ask What Happens in the Sessions?

We understand that you are invested in your child and that you have brought them to CASY because you care about them. However, we do not provide feedback on the sessions unless we are concerned for the client’s or somebody else’s safety.

Counselling is confidential. It is a private and personal relationship between the counsellor and the client. The client needs to be reassured that the information shared will remain in the counselling space. For counselling to be effective the relationship needs to be based on trust. However, the counsellor will be encouraging your child to share any thoughts, feelings or strategies that they feel work for them.
